2011 marked the 50th anniversary of East Bay Bonsai Society sharing its bonsai works with the public.  This year’s show took place at the Lakeside Garden Center in Oakland, CA on October 8th and 9th and featured a strong showing of bonsai trees and suiseki viewing stones.  Of special note was a tree displayed by Rick.  His Sierra juniper has been selected as the feature tree for EBBS’s up coming artisan flyer.  There were numerous comments made about the quality of the show.  Make sure to check out the photos of this years trees.

In addition to the exhibition of trees and stones, Kathy Shaner conducted a series of critiques.  The first critique was an assessment of the EBBS exhbit.  Special attention was placed on the use of color and texture to express a feeling, season or other special time of year in each display.  There were many participants in this year’s show and their hard work was well worth all of the smiles.

Lastly, a demonstration by Kathy Shaner swept spectators off their feet.  Through her experience, keen artistic eye, and might, Kathy transformed a collected juniper into a well structured bonsai.  A red blur of raffle tickets spun around the room as branches were removed and a seemingly elusive bonsai began to present itself.   Sounds of stretched branches echoed in the ears of spectators as they reacted in amazement, shock, and wonder. Congratulations to Phil for winning the raffle and such a fine tree.
