Repotting Junipers (Part 1)

Repotting is best done in late fall or early winter. The soil mix is composed of ½ Acadama,  ¼ lava, and ¼ Hyuga. About a tablespoon of bone meal and a handful of charcoal are added to each pot before covering the roots. About a tablespoon of sulfur is also added to the sierra junipers. An important task is to remove any residual soil collected along with the tree since it leads to poor drainage and possible root rot.

Trees are best fertilized with organic fertilizer throughout the growing season. Plants are regularly inspected to remove moss, fungus, algae, pests, pollen pods, and seeds.

Junipers can be styled by wiring, pinching and careful trimming. The trimming exposes the interior of the tree to light as well as allowing the branch structure to be seen.
